What happens when you focus on fixing the wrong cause of a problem?

No matter how big or small, complex or simple a problem is; what happens when you go about focusing on the wrong cause of a problem?

Here are some real examples. A company, that I know, just discovered they have been focusing on the wrong cause of a problem and are now making adjustments. Unfortunately, they have been trying to fix the wrong cause of the problem for 3 years at an estimated cost of 6 to 7 million dollars.

Another close-to-home example, wildfires in Colorado have been looking at beetle kill of trees as the culprit, creating dead trees which fuel the wildfires. http://science.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/06/24/19120133-beetles-to-blame-for-colorados-fires-blame-climate-change-instead?lite&ocid=msnhp&pos=1

But wait! if we take a different broader perspective-an epidemiological look, and continuously ask what came before the problem, we can gain further insight into other causes that need to be addressed.

Even though you might not be working on these types of problems, problems are problems, it is just a matter of scale, resources and your attitude about solving problems.
