“What we have here is a failure to communicate”.

“What we have here is a failure to communicate”.  A famous quote from the movie: Cool Hand Luke.  In my professional and personal life, communication problems are the number #1 problem reported.  You would think with all the technology we have in the 21st Century, we should have communication mastered.  And yet, there is still a huge disconnect-and I am not just talking about a dropped cell phone call.   Think about your current and former work situations, and ask yourself; was there a communication problem?  Think about personal and professional relationships that you have, past and present.  Have you experienced communication problems?

I am going to go out on a limb here, I disagree with the quote;  “What we have here is a failure to communicate”.  What we have is a failure to listen and understand each other.

There is a lyric in the song: “Blowing in the wind” that sings; “How many ears must a man have before he can hear people cry?”

It’s funny you posted this. Just last week I was thinking about that famous quote. We had a huge two day meeting where we flew managers in from 6 states to go over 2011 Operations, and goals etc for 2012. I almost used this line. I agree with you on the failure to listen and understand. Now, the question is, how to get people to slow down enough to listen, process information, and respond???

      Thank you Krysti,
I like your question; “how do we get people to slow down and listen to each other?”
Would you care to share how you slow down and listen to people in your life?
