Resilience; when the world hands you a lemon.

What do you do when the world hands you a lemon?  This could represent a disappoint, a setback, a rejection, bad news, unexpected turn of events, an accident,  a life-changing experience and other examples.  Often, I am asked how I stay optimistic when faced with disappointment. Life is going to hand us lemons one way or another.  I don’t pretend that I am happy when I really feel sad.  I accept the feelings I am experiencing.  It is disappointing and sad to experience the death of a loved one or pet.  It is disappointing to be rejected by a potential employer, get passed over for a promotion or experience a lay-off.  At some point, we have to realize that lemons are going to be handed to us throughout our lives, sometimes one at a time, sometimes; lemons are dumped upon us by the truckload.    We have the power to choose how to cope with the lemons in life.  Attitude is more important than facts when the world hands us a lemon.

I focus my attention on what I can do and want to have happen rather than pitching a tent and camping out on the land of disappointment for the rest of my life.  Yes, I do believe in maintaining an attitude that when the world hands me a lemon, make lemonade.  This is a great attitude to maintain resilience when life doesn’t go according to plan.
